10 reasons we love libraries! – Yes just 10 for now! Public libraries across the world are amazing and changing all the time to meet community needs. Because of this every now and again we choose items from our twitter feed that we think you will enjoy!
We love seeing all the reimagination and transformation of libraries across the world, because these fabulous learning communities are supporting citizens and further developing as local and national digital and social equalisers.
For centuries librarians have been busy with the role of their library buildings as portals to information, print and then digital. In addition to free Wi-Fi, laptops and computers libraries play an essential role in advancing digital literacy, many offer formal or informal digital literacy programmes and provide classes or informal help related to coding/computer programming, robotics, and 3D printing. Also recently and even more so post-covid we know they are about time for people and spaces, for community building.
This week we chose “A Time of Renewal For America’s Libraries” the theme of PLA conference in Portland at PLA 2022. And we loved hearing about the digital immersive reality roomand outdoor, sensory story-telling garden in a new library in Gloucestershire. Also we loved sharing how libraries can help and support Ukraine, refugees and communities at this time.
Like the Solus team, library peeps love to share so read about the great collection of free resources that support library workers’ learning and CPD.
We think that Western Australia have got it right as they move to ensure sustainability of public libraries with a connected state-wide system where library users have single-card access to collections and services across the state. And we loved the new Essex library plan to reshape the service, boosting child literacy in deprived areas and pledging building improvements. Also on that theme “School libraries in a squeeze” is a must-read!
Of course we had to blow our own trumpet with our unique to the SOLUS mobile app’s ability to support consortium members with their own template, an app-within-an-app. The templates link to the master subscription but at a fraction of the price.
