Window to the wider world Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui! When Wellington’s Central Library finally re-opens in 2025, it will be under a new official name: Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui. We love it as it means “window to the wider world ” which seems to us to be a perfect definition of a library.
The name has been used as a secondary title for several years, but will now be recognised as the official name of the library as part of a commitment to consult with mana whenua throughout the design process.
In October 2020, city councillors voted unanimouslyto spend $179m to fix and upgrade the earthquake-prone building, which has been closed since March 2019, and officers began the exciting task of exploring design options.
This year the new Wellington City Libraries app helps open that window to the wider world just a little earlier. The brand-new updated version of of the Wellington City Libraries app is a new version with a fabulous new look and new functionality.
Watch the great video below and here’s a quick overview of some of the new app’s features:
- Add multiple family cards for quick access on the go
- See what’s on loan and when items are due across all the family cards you’ve added
- Search the catalogue, check your card and manage your reserves
- Find your nearest library branch that’s open right now
- Access our eLibrary apps and read, listen, watch, learn and more!
